In 1887 Dr. Henry Cogswell and his wife executed a trust deed setting apart real property to establish and endow Cogswell Polytechnical College. The school was opened in August 1888 as a high school with departments of technical education for boys and business education for girls. In 1930, the school’s status was changed to that of a technical college offering a college-level two-year program. In 1971 Cogswell began offering four-year Bachelor degrees. The school moved to its current campus in Sunnyvale in 1993. Cogswell is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Cogswell offers a four-year BA degree in digital arts and animation with concentrations in three-dimensional animation, entertainment design, game design, and three-dimensional modeling. The coursework includes traditional and digital arts classes with components of theory, production, and general education. The digital arts and animation core includes courses in two-dimensional design, color theory, digital imaging concepts, creativity and content development, photography, Web design, drawing animation, sketching, figure drawing, perspective and rendering, sculpture, three-dimensional modeling, storyboarding, desktop production, and video editing. The animation program includes character, non-character and experimental animation. Coursework includes acting, two-dimensional animation, character rigging, three-dimensional animation principals, drawing animation, project and portfolio courses, and upper division electives. The entertainment design concentration combines a strong traditional art background with skills in digital imagery. Coursework includes figure drawing, painting, digital painting, illustration, portrait sculpture, texturing, concept design, modeling, and portfolio courses. The game development concentration coursework emphasizes non-technical collaborative skills while fostering creativity and innovation. Coursework includes texturing, illustration, digital painting, modeling, game design and theory, game development and production, game collaboration, upper division electives, project courses, and an internship. The modeling concentration develops both two and three-dimensional skills in modeling, with focus on conceptual visual skills, hands-on model building, digitizing, and texture mapping. Coursework includes painting or illustration, texturing, figure sculpture, lighting and layout, modeling, character rigging, concept design, and portfolio courses.

Students may also study to earn a four-year BS degree in digital arts engineering. The program is intended to create a balance between software and digital arts. Students gain skills in tools programming, scripting languages, and software development; concept design, modeling, texturing, rigging, and animation; and computer simulation, visualization and game engine programming. The engineering core includes coursework in sketching, color theory, computer programming, figure drawing, perspective and rendering, data structures, sculpture, three-dimensional modeling, animation, game and interactivity, three-dimensional animation, scripting languages, graphics programming, tools programming, and a software engineering project. Students must also complete general education requirements, general engineering requirements, and senior electives from a restricted list. Available electives include lighting and layout, visual effects, and graphics.

The financial aid office at Cogswell works to provide new and returning students with flexible financial aid packages to make college an affordable experience. In addition, the college offers many institutionally-funded scholarships to new and returning students. All scholarships are merit-based, and students are automatically considered for each once the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is completed. Available scholarships include the Presidential Scholarship, the Deans Scholarship, the Multiverse Scholarship, alumni scholarships, the Harry C.
